Choosing the Right Type

Props vs. Set Dressing: Props are items actors directly interact with (pick up, use, hold). Set dressing is everything else that decorates the set.

Special Effects vs. Visual Effects: SFX happens on set during filming (rain machines, pyrotechnics). VFX happens in post-production (CGI, compositing).

Animals vs. Livestock: Animals covers trained animals that perform specific actions. Livestock covers farm animals present as set dressing or background.

Sound vs. Music: Sound covers non-musical audio requirements. Music is for actual musical performances or specific music playback.

Extras vs. Featured Extras: Extras blend into the background. Featured Extras have a featured action, close-up, or specific business that singles them out.

Set Dressing vs. Art: Set Dressing is furniture and objects placed on set. Art covers hand-painted signage, murals, and crafted artwork specifically created for the production.

Special Equipment vs. Light vs. Grip vs. Camera Equipment: Use the most specific type. Lighting fixtures go under Light, grip rigging under Grip, lenses and camera bodies under Camera Equipment, and Special Equipment for cross-department rigs (cranes, Steadicams, underwater housings).

Guns vs. Props vs. Stunts: Firearms (real or replica) always go under Guns so the armorer is on the call. Use Props for non-firearm items actors carry. Use Stunts for fight choreography.
