Generate scene synopses with AI

AI synopsis generation writes a short summary for each scene, so you do not have to. Synopses appear on the scene and feed downstream into the strip board and reports such as the call sheet. This article explains how generation works, where you trigger it, and how to review the results. For the click-by-click steps, see Synopsis.

How synopsis generation works

The AI reads each scene’s screenplay text and produces a concise summary of the key action and who is in it. Generation runs as a background job; while it runs, the AI job status bar appears below the top bar with progress and a cancel X. Generation uses credits at 1 credit = 1 scene processed, charged only when the run succeeds.

Like other AI work, generated synopses are proposed for your review before they land on your scenes.

Where to trigger generation

You start synopsis generation from the AI tools menu, which appears in two places:

  • The breakdown overview, acting on the scenes you select with the row checkboxes.
  • A single scene’s scene detail view, acting on that scene.

In both menus the action is Generate Synopses. In the breakdown overview the label shows the count of selected scenes.

Review and apply synopses

When the job finishes, SceneItAll prompts you to review with a toast, a notification, and a Review banner. Selecting Review opens the Review AI Synopses dialog, which lists the proposed synopsis for each scene.

Select or deselect each scene’s synopsis, or use Select all / Deselect all to toggle them in bulk. The header shows how many are selected. To apply your selection, use the button at the bottom right — its label reads, for example, Apply: 8 synopses. To discard the whole proposal, select Reject All.

Applied synopses are written to their scenes. Anything you left unchecked is discarded.

After a synopsis lands

A generated synopsis appears in the scene’s Synopsis field in scene detail. A small badge next to the field label shows its state:

  • An AI badge (grey) means the synopsis is the unedited AI draft.
  • A Reviewed badge (green, with a check) means you have edited the synopsis since it was generated.

To edit a synopsis, type directly in the field. As soon as your text differs from the AI draft, the badge switches from AI to Reviewed.

Tips

  • Generate synopses for several scenes at once by selecting them in the breakdown overview before opening the AI tools menu.
  • Treat the AI synopsis as a starting point. Edit it to match your production’s house style and the level of detail your call sheets need.
  • Synopses are most useful to assistant directors building daily schedules and to producers reviewing coverage.
